About the Pentomino Puzzles

A pentomino is a shape made of 5 equal-sized squares, which are connected edge-to-edge. There are 12 different pentominoes, but when reflections and rotations are considered as distinct shapes there are 63 different shapes.

The 12 different pentominoes are often identified by their shape resembling a letter. They are called F, I, L, N, P, T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z.

Pentomino puzzles consist of a target area which has to be covered by the 12 pentominoes. Common puzzles are for example a 6 x 10 rectangle, or an 8 x 8 square with a 2 x 2 hole in the middle. But many other puzzles are possible, each having several solutions.

Puzzles with target areas that have the shape of the 12 pentominoes can be solved by using 9 pentomino shapes.
