Recently I discovered a very useful software/service called Evernote. It’s great and I am using it almost daily te help me remember things. The idea is very simple: if you want to remember something, just store it in Evernote and that’s where it stays until you need it again.
You can use Evernote on your computer, tablet or phone, and the software will synchronize your notes so that you can always find them, wherever you are. For example you write a shopping list on your computer while you are at home, and when you are shopping you can see the list on your phone.
Different types of notes
Many notes are just a piece of text you type, but you can also store photographs, scans of documents, record a voice memo, or even make a drawing. It’s also possible to save your favorite website including text, pictures and links.
If you have many notes it is a good idea to organize them a bit. One way is to put them in folders. Another way is to tag them with appropriate labels. Both ways will help you to quickly find the notes when you need them. But of course the software also has a search function which will help you find the note you were looking for.
This is one of my favorite parts of Evernote. If you have a note (or part of a note) that has to stay secret (for example you write down a PIN code or a list of passwords) you can encrypt this text and protect it with a pass phrase.
It’s easy, you just highlight the text you’d like to encrypt, then right-click the selected text and choose “Encrypt Selected Text”. The software will then ask you to enter an encryption passphrase. Entering a passphrase, which you can easily remember, and click OK. The text will now be encrypted and if you want to see it again you will have to use the passphrase to decrypt and see the text.
Best of all
Evernote is free. Just download the Evernote software to you computer and also install it on your phone or tablet. create an account (needed for syncing between devices) and start taking notes.
